How to Pitch to ϳԹ: We're Always Looking for Freelancers

ϳԹ publishes stories about adventure sports, gear, travel, fitness, health, culture, and the environment. We’re always on the lookout for reporting, essays, service pieces, and media reviews focused on the outdoor world. Rates typically start at 50 cents per word for online stories and go up from there, depending on the complexity of the reporting and your experience as a writer. Our policy is to send checks within 30 days of an assignment being completed.

Thefirst step is to make sureyou’re sending youridea to the right place. Is it a feature-length essay or a quick news hit? A gear review or a travel story? Below this intro, we’ve written specific guidelines for all the sections of our magazine and website, along with the best email addresses for your initial outreach.

Once you’ve determined the best place to direct your story idea, send us a pitch that describes why your story is a fit for ϳԹ, why you’re the writer to do it, how you’ll report it, and why the story is relevant now. If other publications have written about this topic before, tell us why your angle is unique. It’s also helpful (although not necessary)to include a suggested headline and subhead that sum up your story. If you’re new to writing for ϳԹ, send us a few clips in the style of the piece you’re pitching. Finally, because outdoor adventure writing has historically highlighted predominantly white male voices and subjects, we are interested in women, BIPOC, LGBT+, and other diverse voices and subjects.

If you haven’t heard back in a few weeks or if your story is particularly urgent, it’s fine to send a follow-up email. We regret that we can’t respond to all pitches, but we’ll contact you if we think your story could be a fit for ϳԹ. Please don’t call us about pitches or send us unsolicited drafts.

Here are further instructions on how to pitch or submit an idea to ϳԹ’sspecific channels and departments.

About the ϳԹ Fellowship Program

ϳԹ offers paidsix-month fellowships at our headquartersin Santa Fe, New Mexico. We have a few different fellowship roles—including editorial, production, and video production—all of which include working closely with top editorson everything from fact-checking long-form featuresto building stories and editing videos. Our fellows are included in nearly all of ϳԹ’s editorial processes, including feature pitch meetings, film shoots, and casual brainstorming sessions. They get a firsthand look at how amultiplatform national publication comes together. They also have the opportunity to execute their own work during their time at ϳԹ, including a long-term capstone project: previous fellows have written a narrative feature, produced a short film, and manageda social-media platform. Finally, fellows get to participate in periodic instructional seminars and one-on-one meetings with our editorial staff and award-winningcontributors, which provide invaluable mentorship and professional-development opportunities.

Who We’re Looking For:

Early-career journalists and creatives who are excited to contribute to ϳԹ. If you’re new to the outdoor world but passionate about the topics we cover, please don’t hesitate to apply. We especially encourage applications from women, people of color, LGBTQ people, people with disabilities, and others who have been historically underrepresented in journalism and the outdoor industry. ϳԹ is unable to provide work visas for those applying from outside the United States. Normally our fellows are based in Santa Fe, and we look forward to returning everyone to our offices as soon as possible. Until then, this position will be remote. Doing the fellowship remotely after the office is fully reopenedis also an option if you live in California, Colorado, Illinois, or New York (where ϳԹ has current business operations). The most competitive applicants typically have some post-college journalism experience, but we do not require college degrees.

Compensation:

Our fellowship roles are 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Theypay $15 per hour (and time-and-a-half for any overtime hours).

How to Apply:

For more information about our specific fellowship roles and how to apply to them, read on. Our fellowships start at different periods, and we hire for them throughout the year.

Editorial Fellowship

The editorial fellowship is a great opportunity for early-career journalists who want to learn how long-form journalism works. We’re currently hiring an editorial fellow to start March 1, 2021.

Editorial fellows’ responsibilities include:

  • Working with our editors and writers to fact-check our print and online feature stories. At ϳԹ, fact-checking is an integral part of the editorial process, and as afact-checker, you get to watch how a long-form story takes shape, reengineer the writer’s reporting to make sure it’s fair and accurate, and often have a significant voice in the story’s editing process.
  • Fact-checking shorter online and service stories. We also want to make sure our news coverage and reader service is authoritative and credible, and to that end, our fellows fact-check shorter articles, too, from quick-turnaround gear news to health packages and travel guides.
  • Contributing research to various stories and projects. This may include tracking down nautical charts for a map, putting together a data set for a chart, obtaining a court document for an investigation, or reaching out to experts to develop a feature or package idea for an editor.
  • Generating stories ideas to bring to pitch meetings and brainstorming sessions. We encourage our fellows to constantly comeup with ideas, be itaquick news hit, an idea for a special issue, or a pitch for a longer online story.
  • Writingfor the online site as well as the magazine. We often tap our fellows for everything from sidebars in the magazine to online stories on a news development. Fellows also have opportunitiesto pitch and pursue longer stories, including for a capstone project, which involves working with an editor to develop and write a narrative online feature.

Applicants should:

  • Possessstrong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Be able to work well under pressure
  • Have a collaborative, team-oriented attitude
  • Be passionate about the outdoors (but not necessarily a hardcore athlete)
  • Have some professional experience reporting and/or fact-checking at a newspaper, magazine, or website

To apply, please send a cover letter, résumé, and three relevant writing samples to fellowships@outsideim.com.

We are nolonger accepting applications for the fellowship cycle starting in March 2021. We will update this page when we’re hiring for the next fellowship cycle.

Production Fellowship

Production fellows work closely with our editors and art team to present all online content in a clean, timely way.

Production fellows’ responsibilities include:

  • Tackling both daily and long-term production needs for the brand
  • Working closely with the production manager to build stories and packages in the CMS
  • Assisting with photo research
  • Helping with the overall display and presentation of stories

In addition to the above primary responsibilities, fellows with an interest in art direction have the opportunity to work with and sit in on meetings with the art team; fellows with an interest in reporting have the opportunity to sit in on editorial story meetings and write and fact-check articles for the website.

Applicants should:

  • Have experience navigating a content management system (we use Drupal)
  • Be proficient in Adobe Photoshop
  • Have an eye for copy editing and headline writing
  • Have some college or post-college professional experience working at a newspaper, magazine, or website

Previous experience as a producer is a plus, but if you’re motivated, detail oriented, a fast learner, and interested in the editorial processes of a national magazine, we encourage you to apply.

We’re not currently hiring for this fellowship.

Video-Production Fellowship

ϳԹ’s video-production fellow is responsible for aiding in the productionof all in-house video content and supporting our video team to achieve overall channel goals.

Video-production fellows’ responsibilities include:

  • Contributing to the weekly video story-idea meeting
  • Assisting in shooting and editing videos
  • Planning production logistics of on-location shoots
  • Overseeing digital management and the physical organization of camera equipment
  • Building videos for the website and YouTube platforms
  • Preparing the on-site studio for shoots by setting up lighting, checking audio, and building cameras
  • Helping with media management, such as backing up footage andingestingand organizing new and old footage
  • Managing transcription services and adding corrected transcripts to live videos

Applicants should:

  • Have previous experience shooting video and editing with Adobe Creative Suite
  • Be passionate about video production and the outdoor industry
  • Have great organization skills and the ability to juggle multiple tasks at once
  • Have a collaborative and positive team spirit

We’re not currently hiring for this fellowship.

This policy covers the use of cookies and other tracking technologies and interest-based advertising on websites and mobile apps (collectively, “Platforms”) on which this policy appears.

Tracking Technologies We Use

We and third parties on the Platforms collect personal information about users over time and across different websites, apps, and devices when you use our Platforms. We or third parties use several tracking technologies. These may include browser and flash cookies, web beacons, and similar technologies. These may also include device IDs. These technologies are used to track our consumers and Platform users, including for the following reasons:

  • To track new visitors to our Platforms.
  • To recognize past customers.
  • To store your password if you are registered on our Platform.
  • To serve you with advertising content in which we think you will be interested. These ads may be for our own products and services, or the products and services of third parties. As part of this customization, we may observe your behaviors on this Platform or on other Platforms. We may also get information about your browsing history from our trusted business partners.
  • To integrate with third-party social media platforms.
  • To observe your behaviors and browsing activities over time across multiple sites, apps, platforms or devices.
  • So we can better understand our audience, our customers, our Platform visitors, and their respective interests.

We may use both “session” cookies and “persistent” cookies on this website. Session cookies will be deleted from your computer when you close your browser. Persistent cookies will remain stored on your computer until deleted, or until they reach a specified expiry date. For further details, seebelow, consult the help menu in your browser, or visit.

We engage in interest-based advertising

We and our partners display interest-based advertising on the Platforms using information gathered about you over time across multiple websites or devices.

Interest-based advertising (or “online behavioral advertising”) includes ads served to you after you leave our platform, encouraging you to return. They also include ads we think are relevant based on your shopping habits or online activities. These ads might be served on websites or on apps. They might also be served in emails. We might serve these ads, or third parties may serve ads. They might be about our products or other companies’ products.

How do we gather relevant information about you for interest-based advertising?

To decide what is relevant to you, we use informationthat you make available to us when you interact with us, our affiliates, and other third parties. We gather this information using the tracking tools described above. For example, we or our partners might look at your purchases or browsing behaviors. We might look at these activities on our platforms or the platforms of others. We work with third parties who help gather this information. These third parties might link your name or email address to other information they collect. That might include past purchases made offline or online. Or, it might include online usage information.

Controlling Our Use of Tracking Technologies

You may control our use of cookies. How you do so depends on the type of cookie. You can configure your browser to reject browser cookies. To find out more about how to enable, disable, or delete cookies from your web browsers, and to opt out from receiving interest-based advertising from participating companies, visit the opt-out mechanisms of the (United States), the (United States), and the (European Union). The Self-Regulatory Program for Online Behavioral Advertising program provides consumers with the ability to opt out of having their online behavior recorded and used for advertising purposes. If you want to opt out from participating companies, visit the links above. Choices you make are both browser- and device-specific, meaning that you should exercise your preference on each browser and each device you use. If you clear cookies from your browser, you may need to exercise these choices again.

Some of the tracking technologies we or our partners use may not participate in the Self-Regulatory Program for Online Behavioral Advertising. This means you will not be opted out by following the instructions above. Instead, see the chart below to get more information about how to opt out of that tracker’s cookies.

To control flash cookies, click. Why? Because flash cookies do not reside in your browser, and thus your browser settings will not affect them. If you configure your computer to block cookies, you may not be able to access certain functionality on our platforms.

To opt out of the collection of cross-app data on a mobile device for interest-based advertising by companies participating in the Digital Advertising Alliance tool, download the AppChoices app.

If you opt out of interest-based advertising or reject cookies, this will not stop you from seeing advertising—this will just not be tailored to your interests and therefore is less likely to be relevant to you.

Certain choices you make are both browser- and device-specific, meaning that you should exercise your preference on each browser and each device you use. If you clear cookies from your browser, you may need to exercise these choices again.
