\u201cHair does not grow quicker in winter, at least not on humans,\u201d says John DeSpain, a dermatologist at DeSpain Cayce Dermatology Center & Medical Spa<\/a> in Columbia, Missouri. \u201cSome areas do grow faster, but the rate of growth is fairly constant year-round.\u201d Head hair, a fairly consistent baseline, grows at the same speed\u2014about 1.25 centimeters per month\u2014all over your head. \u201cI suspect leg hair is about the same as the scalp,\u201d DeSpain says.<\/p>\n

DeSpain is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology<\/a>, which does not have an official comment about seasonal hair growth. \u201cI took a quick look through the literature and found very little scientific research on this topic,\u201d says Allen McMillen, manager of research and liaison support for the Academy. McMillen did, however, pass along an abstract for the 2009 study \u201cSeasonality of Hair Shedding in Healthy Women Complaining of Hair Loss<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

For six years, researchers in the Department of Dermatology at University Hospital of Z\u00fcrich in Switzerland questioned whether hair shedding reflects seasonal changes in human hair growth. \u201cFrom this abstract, we can gather that the most hair was shed during the summer and the least hair was shed during the winter,\u201d McMillen says. \u201cA sweeping generalization should not be made based on this single study, but there is evidence to suggest there might be seasonality of hair shedding.\u201d So, if you feel like you\u2019re constantly shaving in the winter, it\u2019s likely because you\u2019re shedding less hair\u2014not that you\u2019re growing more.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
