If you're reading this, you like bikes and, ostensibly, the notion of riding them every day. Cool.

This is just an inaugural post (whoopty-doo!), but before we get started, there's a caveat: I'm the guy around here who covers everything that's not a carbon race bike or fully suspended mountain rig. Though I enjoy riding those kinds of bikes as well sometimes, my primary interests lie elsewhere, on the very fertile terrain between those two poles; I see those bikes as being on the extreme (and extremely popular) ends of a pretty populous spectrum. I ride a lot, in a lot of different conditions, on just about every kind of bike out there (except recumbents, but hi down there!). I'm no spandex'd roadie or fat-and-knobby purist or fixie hipster. Just a bike junkie. I ride easy and hard for fun and fitness, couldn't care less about racing anybody (though I'm all about sufferfests, within reason and adaptive ability), and love to go on long exploratories: getting half lost on country roads and lunching under a lonesome tree; climbing deep into the trail network of Portland's 5,157-acre Forest Park; chasing a day's worth of far-flung urban errands on pedal power; heading to a wilderness area for an overnight with a bike built for camping—that kind of thing. So, naturally, my intermittent entries will reflect my riding, and they'll mainly be about showcasing good gear I'd like to share with likeminded folks who might otherwise not encounter it—and will hopefully inspire open-minded people to find the bike they need, not the one they think they want. I'll also do interviews with under-the-radar folks I consider relevant and important. And maybe I'll post some awesome older/historical stuff, too. The bicycle has been around for a long time, and newer isn't necessarily better.

Still around? Cool.
