By the time Nikki Cooley was in elementary school, she was writing letters to her elected representatives from her home in the tiny Navajo community of Shonto, Arizona, a few hours north of Flagstaff. During college, she became the first Navajo person to earn a coveted Grand Canyon river guide license. Today, as a Diné educator, Cooley works with tribes around Arizona to help them better manage and protect their natural resources.
