The San Joaquin is Central California’s largest river, but runs “bone-dry” in stretches due to dams, levees, and excessive water diversions, threatening the habitats, agriculture, and communities that are dependent on the river. In , from Justin Clifton and , we meet grape farmer Walt Shubin. Shubin remembers the San Joaquin when it was wild, a memory that inspired him to dedicate more than sixty-five years to advocating for the river to be free-flowing once again.
