Every spring, thousands of hikers set out from Springer Mountain, Georgia, to hike the 2,200 mile Appalachian Trail. This classic thru-hike takes around six months to complete, and over half of those who attempt the journey drop out before reaching Maine. This year, we traveled to the southern terminus to talk to through-hikers on their first day on the trail and ask them one question: Why are you hiking?
