What is the best waterproof camera for rafting?

My family is going white-water rafting in Oregon this summer. Can you recommend a waterproof digital camera?

The new Olympus Stylus Tough-8000 ($300, ) is shockproof, waterproof, crushproof, and freezeproof. Hopefully you won’t be swimming 33-feet underwater on a raft trip, but if you happen to find yourself in deep with this camera, you could snap an excellent shot of the passing trout. With 12 megapixels, a 3.6x optical zoom lens, Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization and Digital Image Stabilization, you can also take one of those epic, hang-on-the-office-wall shots of your raft burrowing through a Class V hole. Plus, the tap control feature makes the Tough easy to use under water if you should happen to flip.

I own a three-year-old Canon PowerShot SD800IS that I’ve found to be virtually indestructible on forays to the southern Atlantic, the forests of Brazil, the rain-soaked cycling roads of Sicily, and in the hands of 12 rowdy nieces and nephews. My camera isn’t waterproof, but the Canon PowerShot D10 ($330; ) is. With 12.1 megapixels of resolution and a 3x optical zoom lens with Image Stabilizer technology, the D10 can catch you in action and is also waterproof up to 33 feet. Hopefully, however, you’ll be leaving that feature alone.
