This is an obvious one, but worth mentioning. The Maple Old Fashioned perfectly embodies the original definition of a cocktail by incorporating a spirit, sugar, bitters, and water. This recipe calls for rye, but feel free to substitute bourbon on an aged rum.
Preparation
In a lowball glass, add syrup and bitters with a bar spoon of water and gently stir. Add the spirit and stir again to combine. Drop in one large ice cube or several smaller ones and gently stir in the glass until thoroughly chilled and slightly diluted.
