Take Rumpl’s fun, functional outdoor blanket, the Puffy, and make it lighter, warmer, and more packable by replacing the synthetic fill with down. That’s the new Down Puffy ($199).

Only available in a 54-by-80-inch size Rumpl calls “Trekking,” the Down Puffy is just big enough to cover two people’s shoulders as you sit around a fire, and generously covers the back seat of a car or truck. It’s also big enough to tuck under a standard 20-by-72-inch sleeping pad to serve as an ultralight backpacking quilt. But at 1.12 pounds with a comfort rating of 45 degrees, there are better options out there for that particular job.

Using 600-fill duck down, the quilt compresses down to a 6-by-6-inch ball, roughly the size of a grapefruit. That means you can easily throw its considerable warmth into a door pocket in your car, the bottom of a picnic basket, or even tuck it into your man purse, should the need arise for some spontaneous cuddling.

We’ve been carrying the Down Puffy in our new Land Rover, pulling it out for backseat passengers to sleep under or just to keep cozy by the campfire. It’s a fun, versatile accessory that will keep you toasty in the outdoors.
