Vintage old-school ski onesies have made a strong comeback on the slopes lately, and starting Monday you'll be able to rent them from . For a kit including goggles, gloves, and a vintage onesie, prices will start at $25 a day.
“The glory of the onesie, in terms of its warmth and convenience, was something I knew that the world needed,” jokes 28-year-old vice president of sales and marketing Mike Mueller.
GetOutfitted rents high-end ski kits (Patagonia, Burton) via mail order, but Mueller tells ϳԹ that he comes from a long line of onesie-wearers—he's the third generation in his family—and wanted to bring the iconic look back.
“It became a staple in my wardrobe,” Mueller, who's been wearing them since he was 18, says. The idea to add them as an offering was a no brainer. In this age of high-tech outerwear, the onesie is largely worn ironically. “Your fun meter goes through the roof,” he says.
So how does a company collect enough antique ski apparel to satisfy nostalgic snow sports enthusiasts? After friends gifted him one for his birthday last October, he tracked the point of purchase down to a thrift store where, he says, the company has purchased around 80 of the ski suits made by brands like Obermeyer, Bogner, and The North Face. Mueller, who lives in Colorado Springs, won't reveal the name of the secondhand store for fear that it will ge raided. But he did give us a hint: the best place to harvest onesies is somewhere “with a lot of ski culture, places where people have been skiing for a long time, especially in the ‘80s.”
“It’s really an art collection more so than it’s a technical ski collection,” he says.
