THE SELL: A stability shoe that weighs less than nine ounces. THE TEST: We were skeptical, but
it really is true. The Mirage is airy, screamingly fast, and low to the ground (like last year’s Gear of the Year–winning Kinvara, on which the Mirage is based), but the plastic brace on the medial midsole and the more substantial upper offer a decent amount of wobble control. It’s like a marathon racing shoe you can train in: despite its race-flat-like flex and quick turnover, it had just enough cushioning (the rating below refers to amount, not quality) and comfort to handle everyday workouts and distance runs. THE VERDICT: Overpronators, you may now join the minimalist party; heavy ankle rollers, you’ll still want a more substantial shoe. 8.9 oz; 4-mm heel-to-toe drop.
Flex: 5
Cushioning: 2.5
Speed: 5
