Smart and Fast

In an actual emergency, the last thing you want to do is fumble with zippers. Which is why Marmot designed the Backcountry’s external snow-safety-tool pocket with double zippers and a sturdy pull loop: You can rip it open with one quick tug. It’s just one of many progressive features on this 30-liter pack. There’s also a dedicated crampon/skin/wet-gear pocket at the bottom and a hidden sleeve for your ice ax/shovel handle on the front. The main compartment’s U-shaped zipper makes for easy entry, and when it’s time to boot up, its array of straps allows you to carry a snowboard or skis (A-frame or diagonally). Add it all up and you’ve got an extremely user-friendly pack but also a few extra ounces; it’s heavy for its size. 3.5 lbs;
