Hydro Flask’s new is designed for casual strolls—carrying your chilled drinks and food from, say, the side of the road to the swimming hole, or through the crowds to your patch of grass at the festival. But it carries so well, and has enough smart touches, that it’s also the perfect pack for day hikes that involve leisurely summit picnics. There’s no waist strap, but a sternum strap helps keep it in place; the shoulder straps are plenty cushy; and the padded, semirigid back fits comfortably and carries without rubbing or bouncing. The exterior is commuter-bag sleek, but you’ll notice two lash strap mounts for trekking poles, a jacket, or a hat and two exterior pockets—one zippered, one stash— for a map, energy bar, or anything else you might want to grab on the go. There’s also a good-size top lid pocket big enough for an iPad or a few books. And, thanks to a streamlined construction that puts more foam where you need it and less where you don’t, the whole pack weighs in at three pounds—all the more reason to pack an extra summit beer or two.
