BEST EVERYDAY PACK
Consider the RPM a showcase pack from the less-is-more school of design. Climbers who loathe extraneous doodads will love the lean construction, but so will anyone looking for a simple, lightweight, do-anything hauler. On hikes and even long runs, the padded (but frameless) back panel and well-cushioned shoulder straps kept the load riding comfortably. The lightweight 210-denier siliconized nylon didn’t shred when the inevitable rock scrapes occurred (but, not surprisingly, the mesh side pockets did). And in day-to-day use the compact size, minimalist hipbelt, and easy-access top zipper were perfect for low-profile office duty. 1.3 lbs, 1,587 cu in; bdel.com
Bonus: The spare design includes tool attachments and a shock cord that lassos an extra layer or compresses small loads.
Bummer: The hipbelt is just a piece of removable webbing and can’t be overloaded on long days.
