A running shoe that weighs less than eight ounces is usually a flimsy racing flat. So imagine our shock during the first test runs in the Kinvara: It’s a legit training shoe but with 30 percent less weight than most other high-mileage trainers. There’s radically less rubber on the outsole—only a few triangular pads and heel patches for grip—and a scaled-down upper to keep your foot locked in place. But what the Kinvara didn’t sacrifice is a remarkably smooth, enjoyable ride. It has a uniquely level platform: The heel is only 4mm higher than the forefoot (with most shoes, it’s around 12 to 14mm), which encourages midfoot striking and more “natural” running form. We loved it. “I felt like I’m in better running shape than I actually am,” said one tester. “They’re like doping for my feet.” 7.4 oz
