The NAO has an integrated sensor that analyzes ambient light constantly. A microprocessor takes that information and then decides whether to increase or decrease power to the two high-output LEDs—which adjust from 7 to 355 lumens, in a wide or spot beam. Whether you're reading a map 15-20 inches away or searching for a cairn in the distance, Petzl says the NAO will shine just the right amount of light. If you find you don't agree with the lamp's analysis, you can go online and use Petzl's OS software to tweak your preferences. The company says the lights adjust as quick as you can move your head.
We're looking forward to putting it to the test on trail runs at dusk.
