We expected the Elie to make a nice day-tripping boat for adventures close to home. But when one tester loaded it with gear for three days and took it across Vermont’s Lake Champlain in heavy chop, the boat proved its worth as a versatile workhorse. Made from three-layer material, the Elie combines the durability of polyurethane with the stiffness and lightness of a composite. The narrow front of the asymmetrical Swede-form hull (widest behind the cockpit) made the boat fast, while the broader stern allowed for plenty of storage. That V-hull is also responsible for the boat’s excellent tracking. The spacious cockpit never felt
restrictive to newbies, and experienced kayakers found it comfortable, not sloppy. The Elie’s mesh, EVA-padded seat provided excellent comfort and back support. Front and rear bulkheads create two dry storage compartments that hold food, drinks, and gear for multi-day trips, while a drybag-lined day hatch was easily accessible from the cockpit. Oversize rudder-control foot pegs, ergonomic carry handles, and reflective perimeter lines round out the Elie’s accessories. Holds 300 pounds. 14′, 53 lbs;
