How good is Arc’teryx at making jackets? So good that it’s managed to build a streamlined, stylish soft shell that thrives in the backcountry but looks at home in the city. On bitter Minnesota evenings, when everybody else started reaching for their puffies, our tester stayed toasty in the Firée. The key to its surprising warmth is the high-loft Polartec fabric. During the day, testers were just as impressed when its external shell shed wet snow for hours, and its internal stretch-knit wrist gaskets kept the wind out. We also took the helmet-compatible hoody version ($399) out in the field, which some testers preferred for the added warmth and protection. 1.4 lbs;
