THE TEST: The Z40 has all the user-friendly features you’d expect in an expedition pack: big U-shaped front panel, sleeping-bag compartment, and detachable rain cover, plus a new trampoline-style back panelwith great breathability. But it’s the unique suspension we liked most. The Z40’s steel cross frame expands and stiffens under heavy loads but relaxes for a more fluid feel under light ones. Gregory gave the Z40 a trampoline-style back panel, which allowed best-in-class airflow on sweaty hikes but didn’t push the pack too far away from our backs. THE VERDICT: If you like creature comforts, it’s worth the slight weight penalty. 3.1 lbs
