Hungary designers have created a bike that operates without a chain, dubbed the StringBike, .
The uses a symmetrical pulley system of polyethylene rope to rotate the rear wheel and shifts between 19 gear positions. The design is supposed to be smoother, more efficient, and easier to handle than chained bikes, Treehugger.com says. Other advantages include a quickly removed rear wheel for easy storage and dry strings that won't grease your pant legs.
