Sunglasses designed to protect a pilot’s eyes against high-altitude sun. Aviators were invented in the 1920s by Air Force pilot John Macready, who helped Rochester, New York, company Bausch and Lomb craft the first pair. The resulting wire-rimmed shades were issued to the military in 1932 and popularized during World War II. In 1937, consumer models were introduced under the trademark , and they’ve cyclically come back into fashion ever since.
