Filmmaker continues to push the bounds of what a surf flick can be. The man behind and has been voted one of the 25 most powerful people in surfing by magazine. His newest film, , will take the viewer through one day in the life of more than a dozen surfers from around the world—from to Stephanie Gilmore to Albee Layer to . It will premiere on June 20, . Steele is also working on a movie that will debut in September. This Time Tomorrow follows a swell from Tahiti to Alaska over the course of eight days.
caught up with Steele and asked him about the idea behind Here and Now. Here is what he said:
I think there just needs to be an emotional attachment to the surfer, however you get that, so that when you watch the surfing you can relate to that person or you’re rooting for them, in a way. In this film, it’s an overall attempt to humanize these athletes and make their lives more relatable. The surfing is almost secondary, in terms of what’s entertaining. It’s just a real intimate view of what these lives are like.
