Malibu, California's playground for celebrities and surfers, will become the first World Surfing Reserve this October.
The Save the Waves Coalition launched the in 2008 as an effort to “designate and preserve outstanding waves, surf zones and their surrounding environments, around the world.”
First up: Malibu.
Why? Because, the Coalition says, Malibu is California’s definitive pointbreak and one of the world’s first ‘perfect waves’. The city appears in more than 75 surfing films, and established a surfing style sixty years ago that still exists today.
If you're in town, drop by the enshrinement ceremony at on October 9.
