We were chasing Permit with fly rods on Ascension Bay, which hugs the Sian Ka'an Biosphere on Mexico's Yucatan peninsula. Permit, which come into shallow flats to feed on crab, travel in schools or individually. By themselves, however, they are far more alert and difficult to catch.
For a week, I'd painstakingly waited to photograph this fish underwater. In the last minutes of our last day on the trip, my pal hooked into one. Victory!
