Emma Coburn, the fastest American ever to run the 3,000-meter steeplechase, on July 12, 2014, in Glasgow, Scotland, seemingly breaking Jenny Barringer Simpson’s best of 9:12.50 from 2009. But USA Track & Field, the national governing body of the sport, said Thursday that it has rejected the mark for record purposes because Coburn was not drug tested immediately following her race.
“When we inquired as to whether [a drug test for Coburn] was done, it wasn’t,” a USATF official . “There’s not much you can do about that after the fact.”
The official said this is the first time a record has been negated since the testing requirement was implemented four years ago and described the testing requirements for American records as “pretty well-known.”
Coburn , saying, “Wish I was made aware I had to take a test that day.”
