On Saturday, a Texas man became the off the southwest coast of Australia in less than two months. George Thomas Wainwright, 32, was diving alone a few miles from the city of Perth when he was taken by a 10-foot long great white shark. The frequency of attacks has prompted authorities to take the extraodinary and controversial step of setting bait to hook and kill the great whites, an endangered species. There is little way of knowing which sharks were responsible without killing them and checking their stomach contents. “It sounds a little bit like taking revenge, and we’re talking about an endangered species,” said Barbara Weuringer, a University of Western Australia marine zoologist and shark researcher.
