A 15-year-old from South Carolina won the Open Men’s title at Sunday’s championships, becoming only the second east coast surfer ever to win the event. Cam Richards hadn’t even planned to enter the open category, but was forced to after failing to qualify in juniors. “I was really bummed I didn’t make Open Juniors, ’cause that was the main division I was focusing on. So I just took out my anger on the Open Mens,” he said. The competition was held in Huntington Beach, Callifornia, and is traditionally dominated by west-coast surfers. Richards is only the since 1978—NSSA’s inaugural year. It’s been a good early summer for Ruchards: In late June, he at Quiksilver’s , also in Huntington Beach.
