British polar explorer Ben Saunders canceled his expedition to the North Pole today because of continued foul weather, the adventure journal . Saunders was hoping to break the speed record skiing to the North Pole alone and unsupported.
to depart from Cape Discovery on March 15, Saunders had been forced to sit and watch his window of opportunity for the season close. Early this morning he his intention to pull the plug: “Ongoing blizzard at N coast of Ellesmere Island = no flights this year. Time to go home and have a cup of tea. Will update the tonight”
Saunders had twice attempted to reach the North Pole from the Canadian side, having reached it once from the Russian side. The speed record he hoped to beat was 41 days; he planned to do it in 36 days, taking rations to last just 35.
After canceling his attempt, Saunder went on to tweet, “If you succeed in everything you’re doing, you’re attempting things that are too easy” Warren Buffett (via @DoLectures)
