Seventeen avalanches in Afghanistan's 12,000-foot-highSalangPass area buried more than two miles of highway yesterday, after heavy winds and rain loosened up recent heavy snowfall.

More than one hundred cars were trapped — many inside the notoriously dangerous tunnel — and at at least 64 people are dead or feared dead with numbers expected to rise, according to Rescue missions continue today, but a lack of snow-moving equipment is hindering the process.

The Hindu Kush (running between northwest Pakistan and central Afghanistan) is notorious among mountaineers both for its and challenging climbs.
