A 34-year-old woman from the United States suffered cardiac arrest during Sunday’s Rock ’n’ Roll Montreal Oasis Marathon, . The woman collapsed near the five-mile mark of the half marathon course. Paramedics performed CPR and transported her to a nearby hospital but were unable to revive her.
Dr. François de Champlain, medical director for the race, confirmed the death with ϳԹ on Monday.
“As fellow runners, we are deeply saddened by this tragic situation and wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the participant’s loved ones,” de Champlain said.
Additionally, a man in his 40s went into cardiac arrest during the race, . He remains in critical condition.
A representative of the host organization, Competitor Group, said that the two cardiac incidents had no correlation but declined further comment.
In 2011, a man in his 30s died in the hospital after suffering a heart attack at the end of the race, .
Sixteen of the 35,000 participants were hospitalized during Sunday’s race, according to the AP.
