Worldwide fuel usage in road transportation will double by 2050 without new emissions standards, according to a new study. The report, , says that affordable technology to reduce emissions already exists but that policies still need to be enacted to encourage business and consumers toward more efficient fuel-usage behaviors. The IEA recommends “fuel taxes, CO2-based vehicle taxes, fuel-economy standards and better product labeling.” Rich European and Asian nations rate highest on the , while the United States receives what’s basically an “average” rating.
