Rich Froning at the CrossFit Games Sunday. En route to the win, Froning dominated every event on the last day of competition, overcoming his poor performance in the Pool event Wednesday, where he placed 30th. The 26-year-old clinched his win in the Cinco 1 and Cinco 2 events.
In the first half of the Cinco competition, athletes had three rounds of five heavy deadlifts and five weighted one-legged squats per leg before an 80-foot handstand walk. In round two, athletes performed three rounds of five muscle-ups and five deficit handstand push-ups before 90 feet of walking lunges with a fat-bar overhead. Froning beat Ben Smith by 11.6 seconds in Cinco 1 and consolidated his lead in Cinco 2, besting Josh Bridges by over a minute.
Froning will take home $275,000 in addition to prize money for placing in various events. Sam Briggs took home the prize in the women’s field. Her previous best finish came in 2011 when she placed fourth.
The top 10 male and female athletes all received prize money, totaling more than $1.4 million over the week.
