Officials in Puerto Rico have announced a plan to control an out-of-control population of iguanas on the island: kill the lizards and export the meat to the United States. Although iguanas are endangered in many Latin American countries, they are non-native to Puerto Rico and outnumber people. They are blamed causing infrastructure problems as they burrow under buildings and overrun airport runways. The government plans to sell the iguana meat, which can fetch $6 per pound, to the U.S. The Department of Natural Resources hopes to finalize the plan by May.
