Milestones: Xaver Bongard, 1964-1994
By Todd Balf (with Martin Dugard and John Alderman)

Xaver Bongard, one of climbing’s most colorful of big-wall specialists, died on April 15 when both his parachutes failed to deploy during a BASE jump near Interlaken, Switzerland. The 30-year-old Swiss native was well known for his climbs in Yosemite. But most notably, in 1992 he and John Middendorf completed a first ascent on Pakistan’s Great Trango Tower, considered one of
the most difficult high-altitude big-wall climbs to date.
