Khalid Khannouchi, a Moroccan-born runner who emigrated to the United States and established U.S. and world records in the marathon, announced his retirement on Tuesday. Khannouchi set his first world record with a 2:05:42 victory at the 1999 Chicago Marathon. He later gained U.S. citizenship and lowered the U.S. marathon record to 2:07:01 in 2000, then improved that mark to 2:05:38 at the 2002 London Marathon. In that race, one of the , he defeated legendary runners Haile Gebrselassie and Paul Tergat. Khannouchi had been hampered by a foot injury since 2003. He missed the 2004 Olympic trials and finished fourth, as first non-qualifier, at the Olympic Marathon trials in 2007. His failure to represent the United States in the Olympics has .
