Kenyan runners dominated the 2014 New York City Marathon on Sunday. Wilson Kipsang, a former marathon world record holder, won the men’s race with an unofficial time of 2:10:59. Mary Keitany claimed victory in the women’s race with a time of 2:25:10. Her three-second margin of victory over second-place finisher Jemima Sumgong is the closest in race history.
The men’s race was also determined in the final meters. Kipsang pulled away from the second-place finisher, Ethiopian runner Lelisa Desisa, within the final 200 meters of the event. With his win in New York, Kipsang has claimed titles—in Berlin, London, and now New York—over the past 13 months. Boston Marathon champion Meb Keflezighi came in fourth place and was the top American finisher with a time of 2:13:18. Two-time New York City Marathon winner Geoffrey Mutai finished in fifth place.
Desiree Linden, the top American in the women’s race, finshed in fifth place with a time of 2:28:11.
