As an Appalachian Trail thru-hiker in 2008, Kimberly 鈥淗ippie Chick鈥 Hester thought running a hiker hostel would feel like hosting friends for a party every day. Six years later,听when Hester and her thru-hiker听husband, Jerrod (trail name听鈥淧oet鈥), bought , the iconic hiker hostel on Maine鈥檚 AT, she put her hypothesis to the听true test.

鈥淭here are no days off. It鈥檚 a crazy-busy, seven-day-a-week job from June through October,鈥 says the 38-year-old Kimberly.

And the bit about transient hikers feeling like friends? 鈥淭hey definitely do,鈥 she says. 鈥淭here鈥檚 a wonderful camaraderie among hikers, so running 厂丑补飞鈥檚 does feel like having friends over all the time.鈥

厂丑补飞鈥檚 Hiker Hostel has long been a community center of sorts. Monson is the first town southbound AT hikers reach after traversing the celebrated 100-Mile Wilderness. But in the 1970s, the town had no restaurants. So, in 1977,Keith and Pat Shaw started cooking lavish breakfasts for hungry thru-hikers at their Monson home, located just off the trail. Soon, 鈥淥ld Man Shaw鈥 and his hiker hostel grew into the stuff of legend.

鈥淧eople have told me that you got this sense from Keith Shaw that he鈥檇 do anything for you,鈥 Kimberly says. Shaw would drive out in stormy weather to pick up hikers on the trail. He cooked all-you-can-eat breakfasts ordered by number: Call out 鈥渇our,鈥 and you鈥檇 get eggs, pancakes, bacon, and sausage鈥攆our of each. 鈥淗e was a total character from rural Maine,鈥 Kimberly says,听鈥渁nd people thought he was hilarious.鈥

Shaw听died in 2004. His son, 鈥淛unior,鈥澨齬an it for a year before selling it to longtime Monson resident and retired schoolteacher听Dawn MacPherson-Allen, who soon grew weary of hotelier life. In 2014, Kimberly鈥檚 parents, who run an AT hiker hostel in Millinocket, Maine, told her听that 厂丑补飞鈥檚 Hiker Hostel was up for sale. Hippie Chick and Poet听took the plunge.

These days, the Hesters, who had been working as schoolteachers in Florida, spend half the year in Monson, population 680. They take winters off to travel鈥擩errod thru-hiked the Florida Trail last year鈥攁nd to homeschool their two kids.

The Hesters are also keeping some of 厂丑补飞鈥檚 traditions alive. Belly-filling breakfasts ($9) remain part of the hostel鈥檚 experience; Jerrod even cooks them in 厂丑补飞鈥檚 original cast-iron skillets. Eggs are still cooked to order, only now 鈥渢hree鈥 is the standard number for everyone. The pancakes now feature Maine blueberries听and are served with fresh-ground coffee. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 want to drink lousycoffee every morning,鈥Kimberly jokes.

The Hesters also made听a few other听changes. They stocked the hostel with a banjo, mandolin, guitar, and steel drum to facilitate impromptu jam sessions. And they replaced the hostel鈥檚 flooring. 鈥淲e wanted to keep the eclectic look, but the place听needed a bit of renovating,鈥 Kimberly explains.

Additionally, the couple created a gear shop so they could offer southbounders the same kind of gear makeover that the famous offers northbounders arriving at Neels Gap听in Georgia. 鈥淧oet and I spent $1,000 there to replace our two-person sleeping bag and my too-small boots,鈥 Kimberly recalls. Jerrod conducts load-lightening 鈥渟hakedowns鈥 at 厂丑补飞鈥檚 and sells lightweight performers from brands such as Big Agnes, Leki, Jacks R Better, and Hyperlite Mountain Gear.

The Hesters even established a new tradition of their own: Each hiker to arrive at 厂丑补飞鈥檚 (where )听is greeted with a complimentary PBR or soda. 鈥淲e want to let people know it鈥檚 comfortable here, that we鈥檙e not all about rules right away,鈥 Kimberly says. 鈥淧eople really appreciate it. And they鈥檙e glad that 厂丑补飞鈥檚 is still open, that someone cares enough about it to keep it open.鈥
