Nicki Sorensen, a Danish former pro cyclist and current coach for the Tinkoff-Saxo team, admitted on Monday that he doped during the early part of his career. The announcement, , came the day before Denmark’s anti-doping agency was set to release a report (featuring Sorensen) on the use of performance enhancers in cycling.
“I have doped. I have fully admitted that,” he told BT, . “I’m sorry for that and wish I could have done it differently.”
that between 2003 and 2011, Sorensen won four national road race championships in Denmark, as well as stage races during the 2005 Vuelta a Espana and 2009 Tour de France.
Sorensen told BT that his choice to dope was his own and that his team manager did not pressure him. He also said it was more than ten years ago, in the early stages of his riding career. He cooperated with (ADD) in its three-year study (the findings span almost two decades) because he wanted to ease his conscience and help the sport of cycling.
