If you didn’t make it to California's Coachella Valley for the inaugural 4xFAR, you may be wondering what, exactly, went down in the desert. That’s a fair question, as there’s never been a festival quite like it—one that combined an eclectic, A-list music lineup with an interactive adventure village featuring everything from fly-casting clinics to group yoga sessions. And it was all anchored by an epic test-drive course purpose-built to put the iconic —which the company is bringing back to the U.S. this year after a 23-year hiatus—through its paces.
Each day started with diehard Land Rover fans checking out one another’s rigs before morphing into a full-fledged music festival in the afternoon, with performances from Anderson .Paak and the Free Nationals, Mark Ronson B2B Q-Tip, Young the Giant, Kurt Vile & the Violators, and more. In between sets, well, there was a lot happening.
Attendees learned about overlanding and backcountry safety at workshops led by expert guides. They took breath-holding clinics with legendary big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton, learned to fly-cast from the shore of the venue's aquamarine lagoon, and tested out the newest Niner mountain bikes on an obstacle course. They threw axes, rode Onewheels, rock-climbed, slacklined, customized water bottles, and, of course, got behind the wheel of the new Defender, experiencing firsthand the vehicle's impressive off-road chops on a challenging and obstacle-ridden test track.
Virtually every nook of the venue had a different interactive experience. There were hammock yoga sessions, knot-tying classes, foraging and edible plant workshops, and outdoor cooking demonstrations. And anchoring all of it, there were plenty of opportunities to see how the new Defender, which will be available in Spring 2020 with everything from a portable rinse kit to wash your mountain bike to an integrated air compressor to pump up your inflatable SUP, makes it easier than ever to pull off your next adventure.
