Duathlon: Stop Your Whining
By Todd Balf (with Martin Dugard)

Heinous weather was just about the only thing in hot pursuit of top-ranked duathlete Maddy Tormoen at the season-opening Powerman Duathlon in Zofingen, Switzerland, on May 14. Tormoen clobbered the field for the biggest payday in multisport history (see “Who Needs Pruny Toes?” Dispatches, August). The victory, worth $50,000, came after the American publicly flogged multisport’s
newest European darling, French triathlete Isabelle Mouton, in the third of five stages, a 150-kilometer bike ride. (The three bike legs were interspersed with a 13-kilometer road run and a 30-kilometer trail run.) Just finishing the race was a feat–several prominent racers, including Kenny Souza and Jeff Devlin, dropped out because of near-freezing temperatures, driving rain,
and snow flurries.
