American Sasha Digiulian won an overall gold medal at the climbing world championships in Arco, Italy, this weekend. Digiulian, 18, is one of the the U.S. team’s youngest members and is currently ranked on 23rd in the world. She taking silver in bouldering. In the lead final, Digiulian and all but one of the other finalists, lead champion Angela Eiter, set two-thirds of the way up the route. Unlike bouldering, the lead, or roped, event is scored according to the highest handhold the climber reaches. Overall scores are a combination of climbers’ finishes in both events, plus a third event, speed climbing. The win was an impressive achievement for Digiulian, as no other American reached finals in any event. On the men’s side, Adam Ondra won the overall title after taking third in lead and second in bouldering, his best finish since taking silver in bouldering during his first appearance at the world championships in 2009.
