British rider Mark Cavendish sprinted to the 16th stage victory of his carreer and Thor Hushovd retained the overall lead after a crash-filled fifth stage of the Tour de France on Wednesday. Radioshack rider Janez Brajkovic with wounds to his head and knee after he, Rabobank leader Robert Gesink, and several other cyclists went down in a crash. Christophe Kern also dropped out. Contador fell in a separate crash but was able to remount and join the pack. Later, Nicki Sorensen of team Saxo Bank went down after a photographer’s motorcycle hooked his handlebars. The course travelled and exposed riders to gusts of high winds. Cavendish’s win came at the end of a dramatic mass sprint. It is his first Toiur stage win since last year’s .
