Colordans Ricky Gates and Kim Dobson won the Mount Washington Road Race, the steepest mountain run in the United States, on Saturday in New Hampshire. Gates, 30, lives in Woody Park, Co. and is a former U.S. national mountain running champion and the 2009 Mount Washington winner. He edged past Colorado Springs, Co. runner Tommy Manning 200 meters from the summit to win by ten seconds in 1:01:32. Dobson, who is 27 and lives in Denver, beat another Coloradan, Brandy Erholtz, by 33 seconds. The women’s finishing order was reversed from the , where Erholtz was the victor over Dobson by 15 seconds. Neither Gates nor Dobson challenged the Mount Washington course records of 56:41 or 1:08:21, set by Jonathan Wyatt and Sherwarge Amare in 2004 and 2011, respectively, but Simon Gutierrez of Alamosa, Co, set a new men’s masters record in 1:04:33. The Mount Washington Road Race climbs 4,650 feet over 7.6 miles, at an average grade of 11 percent, to finish at 6,288 feet.
