Experienced mountaineer and Everest climber Karsang Namgyal Sherpa died suddenly in Base Camp yesterday (4/17 Nepal time) afternoon. Karsang was the son of the legendary “Snow Leopard” Ang Rita Sherpa, who’s summited Everest 10 times without supplemental oxygen. The cause of death won’t be known for certain until an autopsy can be done, but Karsang, who was working for Kathmandu-based , was out and about in Base Camp when he began complaining of a dry throat. His brother-in-law took him to his own camp, where Karsang drank several bottles of water. While people tried to help him walk back to the Prestige camp, Karsang collapsed and couldn’t be revived. Local Sherpas do not suspect altitude sickness.
