A mountaineer died on Friday while climbing Alaska's 20,327-foot Denali. The Italian climber, , 67, died of traumatic injuries after falling 1,000 feet during a traverse between Denali Pass and a camp at 17,200 feet. Colombo’s death is the second on Denali in the past week. On May 11, four mountaineers climbing with the guiding company fell while descending from the summit via the West Ridge. All four sustained injuries ranging from a broken leg to broken ribs and frostbite. While going for help, the Swiss climber Beat Niederer, 38, became separated from the others. The exact cause of death is unknown, but the temperature was negative 20 Fahrenheit. After the other injured climbers were flown via helicopter to Kahiltna, rescurers returned and extricated Niederer's body from 18,000 feet on the mountain. Read a full account of the incident at .
