Alpinists , Denis Urubko and are attempting a first winter ascent of Pakistan's Gasherbrum II, according to . The trio established base camp on January 11 and will address the summitt as weather permits.

Gasherbrum II, the 13th highest peak in the world at 26,360 feet, lies in the Karakoram Range, which is the loftiest mountain system in the world stretching from eastern Afghanistan to the Kashmir region. The peak was first summited in 1956 by Austrians Fritz Moravek, Josef Larch and Hans Willenpart.
