Coffee prices are at a 30-year high, and a warming climate could make the beverage much more expensive, according to a new study published in the journal . Researchers at London’s Royal Botanic Gardens used computer models to calculate that the number of locations with the proper conditions to grow coffee will drop between 65 and 99 percent by 2080. They cited the example of South Sudan: “The modeling predicted that Arabica could be extinct by the year 2020 due to climate change, and this appears to be realistic given the poor health (lack of seedlings, loss of mature Arabica specimens, low frequency of flowering and fruiting) of the remaining populations observed in 2012.”
