California Considers Shark Fin Ban

The California state Senate will consider a bill next week banning the sale, possession, or distribution of shark fins in an effort to protect dwindling shark populations. California, home to a population of more than one million Chinese Americans, currently permits the sale of shark-fin soup in state restaurants. It is illegal to kill a shark to take it’s fin, but the sale of fins from legally killed sharks is allowed under California law. With several species of sharks on the endangered list, advocates believe removing the market for fins could help preserve shark populations. But the bill, which does not ban the sale of other shark parts, has , for whom shark-fin soup is a delicacy.
