New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on Thursday that he would make a $50-million donation to the Sierra Club in an effort to fight coal. The money will go to the Sierra Club’s program, which aims to shut down coal plants across the United States. “If we are going to get serious about reducing our carbon footprint in the United States, we have to get serious about coal,” Bloomberg said in a press release. He also expressed frustration with the pace of legislation to clean up energy production. Bloomberg, a man whose political affiliations are fluid—he was once a Democrat, then a Republican, and is now an independent—has initiated environmental programs in New York, through , and has also pushed for public-health programs with private donations and legislation. He is the founder of , a multibillion-dollar business media company.
