Alan Bate, an English endurance cyclist, set a new world record for circumnavigation of the globe last week, reports .

The 45-year-old covered 18,001.1 miles (28970 kilometers) in 114 days returning to his starting point in Thailand. Bate crushed the old record (164 days set only four days before) by fifty days. Despite beating the record, he did not meet his original goal of finishing in 100 days.

The ride took Bate into countries such as Malaysia, New Zealand, Brazil, Pakistan, and India. Close to the finish in Thailand, Bate got food poisoning and was barely able to finish his ride.
